[Posted by leprykaun@users.sourceforge.net (Leprykaun) on Wed, 28 Jul 2004 02:57:04 GMT]
BwentBot v2.4.5 is now up and ready for download.

Only a few minor changes. Fixed some regex formating in the !learn command, did some housekeeping and cleaned up some code. Main change is the ability to do remote IRC commands through the bot. The commands /nick, /topic, /kick, /away, and /mode are now supported and $owner has access to them.

BwentBot mailing list & tracker
[Posted by leprykaun@users.sourceforge.net (Leprykaun) on Wed, 14 Jul 2004 04:24:41 GMT]
To make keeping track of BwentBot's progession easier, I have setup a mailing list for general notices. Its a moderated list, so only emails to the list that are approved by list admins will be sent (no spam). This list will be used to email notification of upgrades and bug patches mainly.

[Posted by leprykaun@users.sourceforge.net (Leprykaun) on Sat, 10 Jul 2004 17:24:59 GMT]
BwentBot 2.4 has become stable and is now ready for public usage! The process of creating 2.4 from the previous 2.3 has been a long process, but it was well worth it.

BwentBot 2.4 has full documentation to make running it easier than ever before and also has a new configuration file to make setting global veriables much easier.

BwentBot Summary

BwentBot is an event driven IRC bot that is completely written in Perl utilizing NET::IRC as its backbone. NET::Google and SOAP::Lite are used for BwentBot's !google capability and GDBM_File is used to statically store its hashed databases. BwentBot is not designed to do channel administration, it is written to aid information channels (like #linuxhelp) in storing their massive amounts of relative links and keeping commonly used answers stored as information blocks.

Currently, BwentBot works on all Linux and BSD architechtures tested on (redhat x86, fedora c1/2 x86, FreeBSD x86, Debian x86, and Slackware x86) but should work on any platform because Perl is platform independant. No other applications are needed to run BwentBot aside from Perl and the associated modules.

BwentBot has many features that make it ideal for infomative IRC channels. These include:

  • Info database
  • Link database
  • Google search (5 links return by default)
  • Google powered spell check
  • List (to list stored info/links/ban/admin/users)
  • Learn/unlearn capabilities (to teach BwentBot links/info/ban/admin/users)
  • Seen database (keeps track of activity on a channel)
  • Say and action commands
  • Ability to ban users
  • Auto-ban for bot abusers
  • Admin only commands and maintanence
  • Logging capability
  • Stats display
  • Help capability to display how to use commands
  • And more added with each release

BwentBot also uses very low overhead, which lets it run on systems with little disk space and ram. It is very stable and has run consecutively for up to 20days in IRC channels without crashing or having errors. BwentBot is worked on regularly, and new features are added as ideas come up.

Running BwentBot is as easy as downloading it, filling in the configuration file, and starting it with perl. The documentation in the tarball is very easy to follow, and explains everything in detail.
